WhatsApp has introduced a new set of calling features alongside expanded end-to-end encryption for voice and video communications, emphasizing its commitment to secure, cross-platform communication.

This update now allows users to make encrypted calls on WhatsApp Web, enabling them to initiate and receive calls directly from a browser without needing to install the desktop application.

The addition of web-based calling represents a significant improvement in accessibility. Users can now conduct one-on-one or group voice and video calls from shared or restricted systems, such as enterprise-managed laptops where app installations are limited.

Despite operating in a browser environment, WhatsApp said it maintains its end-to-end encryption model, ensuring that the content of calls remains inaccessible to intermediaries, including Meta itself.

This encryption uses the same protocol found on WhatsApp’s mobile and desktop platforms, preserving the confidentiality and integrity of real-time communications.

From a security standpoint, extending encrypted communications to web clients introduces new considerations. Browser-based platforms can present additional risks, such as session hijacking, malicious extensions, and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities.

However, WhatsApp’s architecture relies on secure session pairing and cryptographic key exchanges between devices, which minimizes exposure.

Security analysts emphasize that maintaining encryption parity across platforms is crucial, as threat actors increasingly target communication channels for surveillance and data interception.

In addition to web calling, WhatsApp has launched a call transfer feature that allows users to smoothly switch active calls between devices without disconnecting.

This feature is designed for hybrid workflows, enabling users to transition from mobile to desktop environments securely. The transition maintains encryption continuity, preventing session reinitialization that could introduce vulnerabilities.

Another significant addition is the Waiting Room feature, which enhances control over group call participation. When this feature is enabled, participants attempting to join through call links must be approved by the host before entering.

This helps mitigate risks associated with unauthorized access. This concern has affected other conferencing platforms through link sharing and meeting hijacking incidents.

WhatsApp has also implemented QuickHD, which improves initial video quality during the first few seconds of a call. While primarily enhancing user experience, optimized video initialization can reduce packet retransmissions and improve network efficiency, indirectly supporting more stable encrypted sessions.

Additionally, a new noise suppression capability filters background audio in real time, enhancing clarity without compromising encrypted data streams. These updates reflect WhatsApp’s broader strategy to combine usability with strong security measures.

By expanding encrypted calling to web platforms and introducing features that enhance user convenience and access control, the company continues to position itself as a secure communication provider in a landscape increasingly threatened by privacy issues and surveillance risks. The rollout is gradual, with global availability expected in the coming weeks.
